Lai wins Star of Richmond Award
Ian
Lai believes in order for a community to grow, you have
to work from the ground up. Through his work, he has shown local
elementary and high school students that taking care of the earth
is just as important as volunteering their time.
Through
Lai’s community work, many students have learned where their
food comes from. He founded the Terra Nova Schoolyard
Society which has taught students the benefits of healthy
living and taking care of the planet.
With
events like the Earth Day celebration and Chefs
to the Field, Lai has given back to his community in
a way that benefits people and the earth. Chefs to the
Field drew 1,500 spectators and raised over $10,000 for
Terra Nova Schoolyard Project and the Organic
Friends of the Future Society.
Although
he has only been at this work for two years, Lai has already made
a tremendous impact on Richmond and its young students.
Lai
said his society is grounded on three principles: learn, grow
and nourish. He’s learned how to harness and grow the power
of a community and nourish the minds of young students—our
future.
Said
Lai: “Remain true to your vision, follow your guiding principles,
and remember the people that got you there.”
